MONGOLIAN SPOTS

DEFINITION

Mongolian spots are bluish-gray blemishes that resemble bruises, which may randomly appear on a baby’s back, buttocks, or legs. Mongolian spots vary in size from no bigger than a penny to over six inches or more in diameter. Mongolian spots are just variations in skin pigment and are not sensitive to the touch. There is no treatment necessary, and the spots will fade over time.

Mongolian spots are much more prevalent in Native American, African American, Asian, and Hispanic children. They are rare in fair-skinned children but do appear from time to time.
